How We Review
Before you buy it, we put it on the Bench.
Beauty products and beauty technology can be expensive, complicated, and surrounded by bold marketing claims. BeautyBench exists to make the buying decision simpler.
Our reviews combine hands-on experience, product research, meaningful comparisons, and practical value analysis to answer the question that matters most:
Is this product actually worth your money?
We don’t believe every product deserves the same recommendation, and we don’t believe a higher price automatically means better performance.
That’s why every BeautyBench review starts with understanding what a product promises to do and ends with determining how well it delivers for the people most likely to use it.
Two Types of BeautyBench Reviews
Transparency matters. We clearly distinguish between products we’ve personally used and products evaluated through extensive research.
BENCH TESTED
When you see the Bench Tested designation, BeautyBench has firsthand experience with the product.
Depending on the product, our evaluation may consider:
- Performance and results
- Ease of use
- Design and ergonomics
- Speed and efficiency
- Features and versatility
- Build quality
- Learning curve
- Advantages and limitations
- Value relative to competing products
We also tell you how we used the product and the context of our experience whenever that information could affect the results.
For example, a hair tool evaluated on long, curly hair may perform differently on short, fine hair. Rather than presenting one experience as universal, we explain the conditions under which we evaluated it.
Bench Tested means we actually used it.
RESEARCH REVIEW
We also cover products we haven’t personally tested when we believe we can provide useful purchasing analysis through rigorous research.
These articles are clearly identified as Research Reviews.
Our research may include:
- Manufacturer specifications and documentation
- Product manuals and technical information
- Ingredient or technology information
- Independent professional testing
- Credible third-party reviews
- Owner experiences and recurring customer feedback
- Current pricing
- Warranty and return policies
- Competing products
- Previous product generations
A Research Review will never be presented as firsthand testing.
If we later obtain and personally evaluate a product, we may update the article and identify it as Bench Tested.
The Bench Score
Products may receive a Bench Score based on the factors that matter most for that particular category.
Depending on the product, those factors can include:
Performance
Does the product accomplish what it is designed to do?
Ease of Use
How intuitive and practical is it in everyday use?
Features & Versatility
Do its features provide meaningful benefits, or simply make the specification sheet longer?
Design & Build
How thoughtfully designed is the product?
Results
What did we observe during hands-on use, or what does credible evidence indicate?
Value
Does the performance justify the price relative to available alternatives?
Not every category receives equal weight, and not every product is evaluated using exactly the same criteria. A $750 multi-styler shouldn’t be evaluated the same way as a $50 skincare tool.
Our scores are editorial assessments, not laboratory measurements, unless explicitly stated otherwise.
We Compare, Not Just Review
A product can perform extremely well and still be the wrong purchase.
That’s why BeautyBench looks beyond the product itself.
We consider questions such as:
Is there a less expensive product that delivers most of the same benefits?
Does spending more produce a meaningful improvement?
Is the newest generation actually better than the previous one?
Who benefits from the premium features?
Who would be better off saving their money?
Our Bench vs. Bench comparisons are specifically designed around these purchasing decisions.
The objective isn’t simply to identify which product has more features. It’s to explain which differences actually matter.
Price Matters
We don’t evaluate products as though price doesn’t exist.
A premium product can earn an excellent BeautyBench assessment when its performance, convenience, durability, or versatility justifies the investment.
Likewise, an inexpensive product isn’t automatically a better value simply because it costs less.
We consider what you’re getting for what you’re paying.
Whenever possible, we also consider competing products and less-expensive alternatives.
Affiliate Relationships Do Not Determine Our Verdicts
BeautyBench may earn commissions when readers purchase products through certain links on our website.
Those relationships help support the operation of BeautyBench, but they do not determine which products we cover, how we score them, or what conclusions we reach.
A company cannot purchase a better Bench Score.
When an article contains affiliate links, we disclose that relationship.
You should pay the same price whether or not BeautyBench receives a commission.
Manufacturers and Review Products
As BeautyBench grows, manufacturers or retailers may occasionally provide products for evaluation.
When that happens, we’ll disclose it.
Receiving a product does not guarantee positive coverage, a particular score, or even a recommendation.
If we purchase a product ourselves, receive a review sample, or evaluate a borrowed product, we’ll provide relevant context when it matters to understanding the review.
Reviews Can Change
Products change.
Prices change. Software gets updated. New attachments appear. Competitors release better products. Long-term ownership can also reveal strengths or weaknesses that weren’t apparent initially.
For that reason, BeautyBench reviews aren’t necessarily frozen on the day they’re published.
We may update an article when meaningful new information becomes available. When an update materially changes our assessment, we’ll make that clear to readers.
What We Won’t Do
BeautyBench will not claim to have tested a product we haven’t used.
We won’t copy manufacturer claims and present them as independent findings.
We won’t give a product a favorable verdict simply because an affiliate commission is available.
And we won’t tell every reader that the most expensive product is automatically the best choice.
Sometimes the premium product deserves the premium.
Sometimes the less-expensive alternative is the smarter buy.
And sometimes the smartest recommendation is to skip both.
Our Standard
Every BeautyBench review should leave you knowing four things:
What the product does.
How well it does it.
How it compares with the alternatives.
Whether it makes sense for you to spend your money on it.
That’s what we mean when we say:
